Google will remove location data showing when users have visited abortion clinics, Google said on Friday (7/1/2022), quoted by The Guardian.

policies aim to protect the privacy of users when they visit sensitive health-related places, including abortion clinics and domestic violence stores.

The tech industry was concerned that the police might get search history warrants of customers, geolocation and other information that reveals planned pregnancies.
Google on Friday (1/7/2022), said it will continue to reject requests for inappropriate or too large data from governments, without reference to abortion.
The company says Google Account location history is turned off by default.
This policy will take effect in the coming weeks.
This location history deletion applies to users using location history, entries indicating sensitive locations including fertility centers, abortion clinics and treatment facilities will be deleted immediately after the visit.
What about Google users?
A Google spokesperson would not immediately respond to how the company would identify the visit or whether all related data would be removed from its servers.
Google will automatically remove the location information of users visiting abortion clinics.
“We are committed to providing strong privacy protections for the people who use our products and will continue to explore new ways to strengthen and improve these protections,” wrote Jen Fitzpatrick, senior vice president of Google’s Core Systems and Engagement, in a post on blog.
In addition to automatically eliminating visits to abortion clinics, Google also mentions counseling centers, fertility centers, addiction treatments, weight loss clinics, and surgical clinics as other destinations that will be removed from the location history of the ‘user.
Users always have the option for their own location history, but Google is proactively doing this for them as an extra layer of privacy.
“Today we announce that if our Identification of Someone system has visited one of these places, we will remove this entry from the Location History as soon as they visit it. These changes will take effect in the coming weeks,” continued Fitzpatrick.
Google will also have its own App Store data privacy protocol.
“We remain committed to protecting users from inadequate government requests for data and will continue to prosecute those that are too general or legally inadequate.
